Recently
my aunt gave my dad some old pictures from when he was a baby and
young boy. As far as we know, these are the only ones in existance. I
asked my dad if I could borrow them in hopes of doing some restoration.
Here are a few examples of the project.
I started by scanning all of the pictures at 300 dots per inch. The
original pictures were about 2" x 1.5" in size, so even the smaller
images below are larger on screen than the originals. There were nine
in all, but the two most challenging were the two below. In the first
picture there is horrible fading on the left of the picture and a bit
on the right. The camera was tilted a bit counterclockwise when the
picture was taken, and the image of both parents and baby is poorly
centered with my grandmother's hair appearing to have caught some wind.
Though you can't really tell in these low-res version, there was also a
lot of small scratches and discolorations to the pictures. Last, if you
look closely you can see that the image gets blurry toward the edges,
likely due to a poor quality lens.

This was
my first time using Photoshop and while I'm certain others could do
much better, I felt satisfied with my end result. I think that overall
I addressed most of the major problems of the original photo(s) to
produce a single image that was nice enough to display. The biggest thing I'd do differently would be to take replace the
"blurry leg" from the picture on the left with the clearer image from
the photo on the right. But I really doubt anyone but me would ever
notice!.
